Roulette odds: wheel types and what each bet pays
CASINO TABLE

Roulette odds: wheel types and what each bet pays

Roulette pays a fixed multiple for each bet, and the wheel type sets the house edge. This page explains the common wheels, the payouts for the main bets and how to read a table's rules before you place a chip. It describes roulette in general terms and does not confirm which tables the site offers.

OVERVIEW

How a roulette spin is decided

Each spin lands on one pocket, and every bet is settled from that single result. The pocket count and the payout table set the cost of each bet, so two tables can offer the same bet at different odds. Read the rules shown at the table before you sit down.

WHEELS

Common wheel layouts

The two layouts most players meet are the European wheel and the American wheel. The difference is the number of zero pockets, and that changes the house edge on every inside and outside bet.

  • European wheel

A European wheel has 37 pockets, a single zero included. A straight-up bet pays 35 to 1, and the edge is lower than on a double-zero wheel.

  • American wheel

An American wheel adds a double zero, giving 38 pockets. The extra pocket lowers the return on every bet, which is why the table rules matter.

  • Rule variants

Some tables change how even-money bets settle when zero comes up. Read the table's variant rule before staking on those bets.

Payouts and the house edge by bet
PAYOUT RULES

Payouts and the house edge by bet

Each bet pays a fixed multiple of its stake, and the chance of winning that bet sets the house edge. Inside bets pay more and win less often. Outside bets pay less and win more often, and the house edge still applies to both.

  • Straight-up

A single number pays 35 to 1 on a European wheel. The chance of hitting it is 1 in 37, so the return over many spins falls below the stake.

  • Red or black

An even-money bet pays 1 to 1. On a single-zero wheel, zero is the pocket that takes even-money bets for the house, unless the table's rule changes that.

  • Dozens and columns

Dozen and column bets pay 2 to 1 and each cover twelve numbers. The payout is lower than a single number, but the chance of winning is higher.

SUPPORT

Questions about a spin

Questions about a specific spin are best put in writing. The support routes are listed on the Quick answers page.

  • Table name and spin time

Note the table name, the stake and the time of the spin before you write to support@stake.com.

  • Table rules first

Most questions about how a bet pays are answered by the rules shown at the table, so read them first.

CHECK

What this page does not confirm

This page does not confirm which roulette tables the site offers, their wheel type or their limits. Those details can change, so check the table itself before you stake.

  • No table promised

The lobby shows which tables are open at the time you visit. Nothing here guarantees a particular table.

  • No system to beat the wheel

No betting pattern is presented as a way to beat the wheel. Each spin is independent of the one before it.

  • Limits and breaks

Loss limits, wager limits and breaks can be set on the account and apply to casino play.

TERMS

Roulette terms explained

Words that appear at a roulette table and what each one means in practice.

What is a straight-up bet?

A straight-up bet covers a single pocket. It carries the highest payout on the table.

What is a split bet?

A split bet covers two adjacent numbers and pays a smaller multiple than a straight-up bet.

What is a column bet?

A column bet covers one of three columns of twelve numbers and pays 2 to 1.

What does en prison mean?

En prison is a rule variant that holds an even-money stake on zero for a later spin, where a table offers it. Check whether the table uses it before you stake.

QUESTIONS

Roulette questions

Quick answers on odds, wheels and table rules before you sit down to a roulette table.

Which roulette wheel is better?

The single-zero European wheel has a lower house edge than the double-zero American wheel, so it returns more to the player on average.

Can a pattern predict the next spin?

No. Each spin is independent, and a run of reds does not make black more likely on the next spin.

Are the payouts the same on every table?

Not always. Wheel type and rule variants change the payouts and the edge, so check the table rules before you play.

Can I set a limit before I play?

Yes. Loss limits and wager limits can be set on the account, and the responsible play section on the home page explains how changes take effect.
