Baccarat odds: what the banker, player and tie bets pay

Baccarat is a table game with three bets, and each one pays by its own rule. This page explains those payouts in general terms, the commission that often applies to a banker win, and how to read a table's rules before you place a stake.

  • Banker bet
  • Player bet
  • Tie bet

OVERVIEW

How a baccarat round is set up

Each round compares a banker hand with a player hand, dealt from a shoe of cards under fixed draw rules. The outcome is random, so no pattern on a scoreboard predicts the next round. The payouts you see depend on the table's rules, which should be shown before any stake is placed.

BETS

The three bets on a baccarat table

Players usually choose between the banker, the player and the tie. The rule attached to each bet sets its return, and the house edge differs between them, so the choice changes how far a bankroll lasts.

  • Banker bet

A banker win commonly pays 1 to 1 minus a commission, often 5 percent. Commission rules vary by table, so check the figure shown there before you assume an even-money price.

  • Player bet

A player win pays even money, 1 to 1. It is the simpler payout, and it carries no banker commission.

  • Tie bet

A tie bet pays 8 to 1 when the two hands match. Ties are far less common than banker or player results, so this bet loses more often than it wins.

Commission and house edge
PAYOUT RULES

Commission and house edge

The house edge on each bet comes from the table's payout rules, not from any single round. Comparing bets means comparing those edges, which are usually summarised as the share of each stake lost over a long run of rounds.

  • Commission on banker wins

A common rule takes a commission from banker wins, which lowers the banker's return. Read the commission figure on the table before you stake.

  • Edge on the tie

The tie bet carries a much larger house edge than the banker or the player bet, so each stake placed on it costs more over time.

  • Table limits

Minimum and maximum stakes are set per table. A table limit can stop a planned staking pattern, so check it before you sit down.

SUPPORT

Questions about a table

Table questions go to the same support routes as the rest of the site. The Quick answers page explains how to reach them.

  • Table name and round time

Note the table name and the time of the round before you write, so a question about one hand can be matched to the right record.

  • Table rules first

Most questions about a table's payout or commission are answered by the rules displayed on that table, so read them first.

CHECK

What the casino list does and does not confirm

The casino list confirms that table games are one of its categories, and that the catalogue holds more than 6,000 games in total. It does not confirm which baccarat tables run on the site, so check the lobby for what is open at that time.

  • Categories, not titles

Table games are one category in the casino list. This page explains the bets in general terms rather than the features of any one table.

  • Responsible limits apply

Loss limits and wager limits can be set on the account, and products can be excluded from casino or sports for periods from 24 hours up to indefinitely.

  • Age rule

Players must be 18 or the age of majority where they live if that is higher, and Stake can ask for proof of age at any time.

TERMS

Baccarat terms explained

The words used on a baccarat table, with the meaning each one carries in practice.

What is a shoe?

A shoe is the container that holds the cards for several rounds. It is reshuffled at intervals that the table sets, and the cards are drawn from it under fixed rules.

What does a natural mean?

A natural is a hand whose first two cards total 8 or 9. It ends the round at once, so no further cards are drawn.

What is commission?

Commission is a charge taken from some banker wins. Tables that use it state the rate, and the banker payout shown there sits below even money.

What happens on a tie?

A tie is a round where the banker and player hands total the same. The tie bet pays in that case, while banker and player bets are returned under the usual rule.

QUESTIONS

Baccarat questions

Quick answers on odds, commission and table rules before you sit down to a baccarat table in the casino.

What does a banker bet pay?

Usually 1 to 1 minus a commission. The exact rate depends on the table, so check the rule before you stake.

Is the player bet the better choice?

It has no banker commission, but its result is no less random. Compare the house edge stated for each bet rather than relying on a feeling about the last round.

Does a streak change the next round?

No. Each round is a separate random result, and a run of banker wins does not make a player win more likely in the next round.

Can I set a limit before I play?

Yes. Loss limits and wager limits can be set on the account. The responsible play section on the home page explains how changes to them take effect.
